Google AI Overviews: Organic Results Overlap Reaches 99%

A recent analysis has revealed a significant shift in how Google’s AI Overviews (formerly known as the Search Generative Experience) source their information. According to Mark Traphagen from seoClarity, the overlap between AI overviews and the top 10 organic search results has surged to a staggering 99.5%. This data comes from an analysis of 36,000 keywords.

 

Why This Matters

This development is noteworthy because historically, AI overviews included sources outside of the top 10 organic results, sometimes highlighting less authoritative or reliable content. This issue had become more pronounced after Google faced criticism for providing inaccurate or misleading information through these AI-generated summaries.

To address these concerns, Google has implemented significant changes. The visibility of AI overviews has decreased, and improvements have been made to address the quality and trustworthiness of the information presented.

 

Context and Comparison

The change is particularly striking when compared to earlier data. In January, an analysis by Authoritas found that 93.8% of the sources in AI overviews were different from the top 10 organic results. Only 4.5% of generative URLs matched a page 1 organic URL, and just 1.6% were from the same domain but with a different URL.

Mark Traphagen’s observations suggest that Google may now be aligning its AI Overview results more closely with traditional search ranking signals. As he noted, “AI Overview optimization is now just…Google optimization!” This implies that ranking highly in Google’s search results is increasingly crucial for being featured in AI overviews.
